Great markers for the price, but know how to use them by doing research before purchase.
5 out of 5 stars
Great markers for the price, but know how to use them by doing research before purchase.
There seems to be some misunderstanding about how to use these markers, and as a result, some discontent with them that I feel is unfair and misinformed. These are nothing like your alcohol based markers. Those lovely blendable copics are an entirely different thing, and these will not do if you are just looking for a cheaper alternative to Copics. these are water based markers. This means they will ruin weak paper. You will need paper that is built to withstand a bit more, and you will also need to know how to use these markers. For best results, you will need a palette that you can blend colors on. You blend by adding one color to the palette(you cannot blend by using the blender pen directly on color you've already applied to paper), then the other, and mixing those colors together on the palette itself. From there, you can use the blender pen to load your newly blended color onto and then paint it onto the paper. When you are done with the color, wipe the colorless blender on scratch paper--care for the tip of the brush. Using light applications of color as I've described, I use these markers to add color to my sketches on 65 lb sketchbook paper. It may show on the other side, but the way I use it, it hasn't bled through. It's essentially watercolor in a marker. You must remember that. You must be careful not to purchase duplicates--as many packs do contain duplicates. I purchased the primary and secondary packs with no duplicates, and with just those two and a palette, it's quite hard to find a color you can't make or don't already have. I read some advice about these markers that stated that the felt tip of them would hold to a lot of abuse, but don't listen to this advice. Do not abuse your marker tip.As I've said, these are fine markers for a good price, but do know how to use them before making the purchase. I've enclosed a partly colored sketch, nothing amazing, but just to give an example of how these markers look.

I stumbled onto Tombow brush pens while looking through Amazon's coupons, and I thought I'd give them a shot. These are a super cool super fun, and super blendable medium! The colors are so pretty and well pigmented, and you can easily produce a variety of colors with different blending techniques. Here's a quick list of other things I like about these watercolor markers:

    -There is absolutely no odor
-I've noticed very little to no bleeding, but I'm guessing that varies based on the paper you use, since this is a wet medium
-They dry quickly and I've had no problem with smudging
-They're durable and so far I've had no fraying
-They fine tip nib is a good size
-The ink inside is pressurized, so you can store them upright or sideways with no worries about the ink collecting more in one end then the other
-I am terrible with watercolor paints and colored pencils, but these are much easier for me and dry much, much quicker, which is good for my needs!
-The cost is significantly lower here than from art retailers or Tombow. Normally the ten packs are around $40

These markers are super fun, and I'm always learning about new techniques! In my experience, these work better on thicker paper, and I think a lot of people recommend watercolor paper. Regular paper tends to peel up a bit if you go over it too much, but if you just want to try these out and you don't have watercolor paper, they still do blend on sketchbook paper! I might upload some pictures after I pick up watercolor paper to compare the difference, but all in all this is a great purchase!

Update- Watercolor paper definitely makes a big difference! The colors blend better, the paper holds up better, and you can create a lot of nice watercolor effects, like the background for the octopus. I got some of the colors by blending on another surface and then picking it up with a marker, but the colors you see were made only using the markers in the pack.
For reference, I made the frog on a blank index card, which was much harder. It didn't blend as well and the paper peeled up a lot.

I really, really love these markers!

    I hope this helps!

These markers are an excellent alternative to the also excellent but ridiculously expensive Copic markers. I couldn't afford those and I am a huge fan of Tombow's pencils and Mono erasers, so I decided to give these a try and I'm awfully glad I did. As the name implies, they have two separate tips, one a tapered felt brush-shaped tip for thin-to-thick brush strokes, and a smaller bullet-shaped tip for finer lines and detail. I've bought three sets now, the landscape set, the greyscale set and the primary color set and I will probably keep expanding until I have a fuller color range. In fact, I should've gone ahead and bought the 96-color set, but I was hesitant to make that big of a commitment without trying them first.

They apply color evenly, getting darker if you layer brushstrokes on top of each other and each set comes with a colorless blender, which allows for smoother blending or lightening of colors. The colored ones are pretty saturated and even the light colors come out a bit more intense than you may expect. To get lighter tones, I've learned a good tip: Take an old CD and brush out a few strokes of color on it, then pick up a bit of the color with the colorless blender and apply to your work surface.

I recently completed the Inktober challenge with these bad boys, in which I did a different finished ink drawing every day for the entire month of October and the greyscale set of these markers was invaluable in quickly adding depth and shading to those finished ink pieces (see photo). I was surprised at how long the markers lasted before running dry and by how durable the brush tips were, especially considering that I was often using fairly rough-textured watercolor paper much of the time. For best results, I recommend using these with a smooth bristol board or hot press watercolor paper

5.0 out of 5 stars Price:Quality can't be beat. Perfect start for a Tombow collection!
Reviewed in Canada on August 29, 2017
Size: 10 Count (Pack of 1)Color: PrimaryVerified Purchase
I bought these because a friend recommended Tombow pens for beginners people looking to learn hand lettering. The colours are vibrant but not garish. The brush tips are ridiculously satisfying to colour with, and the felt ends are firm and creates bold strokes. I use them to accent my notes but they would be amazing for adult colouring books (although I feel that would be a bit of a waste).

Caveat for artists: Blending is just a wee bit of a challenge, because where the colours overlap it tends to darken. If you apply too many layers (more than two, honestly -- and I have really thick paper in my Nuuna journal), the paper is in danger of pilling. That said, I'm no artist but I figure that's something I'd want to know. I honestly would encourage you to buy them and try them out if you have the extra CAD$17 kicking around.

Personal note: The palette is honestly not my favourite but I bought these because the price really can't be beat -- I got these on sale at about half off. Others in my life are ridiculously stoked on the colours, though -- my husband's bandmate promptly absconded with them in order to design their new album cover. I'm not too mad -- I've got my eye on the landscape palette set now...
