How to Draw Kawaii Sailor Moon: Step-by-Step
- Guide shapes. Draw a vertical centre line, then a circle for the head and a small, simple body with stick arms and legs. Add a horizontal line low on the head to place the face. The head and the body should each take up half of the total height.
- Buns and pigtails. Add two small circles on top of the head for her buns. From each bun, draw a long pigtail that flows down past the body and ends in a playful curl.
- Bangs. Draw her pointy fringe across the forehead, and connect the hair outline from the head to the pigtails.
- Face shape and tiara. Shape the round cheeks and chin, then add the tiara across her forehead with a small gem in the centre. Draw an inner circle on each bun for the hair ornaments.
- Face. Draw two big oval eyes, a little blush on each cheek and a happy open smile. Keep the features low on the face for that extra cute kawaii look.
- Collar and skirt. Add the wide sailor collar across her shoulders and a simple flared skirt shape at the waist.
- Bow. Draw the big bow in the middle of her chest, with a small round brooch in the centre.
- Boots. Add her boots, keeping them short and rounded.
- Arms and gloves. Draw the arms with simple gloves. Stretch one arm out to the side and let the other hand hold the handle of her wand.
- Wand. Finish the wand with a crescent moon and a small orb on top.
- Skirt details. Add the waistband and the pleats on her skirt.
- Outline and erase. Go over your final lines with a fineliner (or a clean inking brush in Procreate), erase the guide lines, and colour her in!

Tips for a Super Cute Sailor Moon
- Make the head BIGGER than you think. Half head, half body is what makes her look kawaii (see the proportions guide above).
- Keep the face low. Eyes and mouth sit below the middle of the head.
- Use the centre line. It keeps the buns, pigtails and bow nicely balanced on both sides.
- Classic colours: golden yellow hair, red hair gems, bow and boots, blue collar and skirt, white gloves, and a soft pink wand.

Yes, this tutorial is made for complete beginners. Each of the 12 steps adds just one new detail, and the guide shapes in step 1 do most of the hard work for you. It’s also a lovely one to draw with kids.
A pencil, an eraser and paper are all you need to start. A black fineliner helps for the final outline, and coloured pencils or markers bring her to life. You can also follow along digitally in Procreate.
Make the head half of her total height and the body the other half. Then keep the eyes and mouth low on the face. These two rules turn any character into a cute chibi version.
Start with two small circles on top of the head for the buns. From each bun, draw a long curved line down past the body and finish it with a little curl. Keep them big and bouncy, because oversized hair is part of the kawaii charm.
Use golden yellow for her hair, red for the hair gems, bow and boots, and blue for the collar and skirt. Her gloves are white and her wand is a soft pink. Pastel versions of these colours look super cute too.
