Totoro is one of the favorites in our house. So today I want to share with you this easy drawing tutorial to draw a kawaii Totoro and paint him with watercolor.

This drawing might look complicated, but I promise you that if you follow the simple steps in this tutorial – you will be able to draw it. 🙂 And it might even come out better than you expect!

Drawing Tips for This Kawaii Totoro
- Think of the main body shape as an egg that is slightly wider at the bottom. This will help you add the other features onto the main shape.
- Draw the big shapes first (like the body), and then add details (like the ears, face, and decorations).
- Use the middle line as a guide to help you keep the character symmetrical.
- You can give this kawaii Totoro different facial expressions to change the story of the drawing. 🙂
- You can also have your Totoro hold other objects, not just a leaf!
Materials I Used
To color the drawing you see above, I used watercolors and a black felt-tip pen for the outlines.
When the painting was dry, I added white accents using white gouache paint. You can also use a white Posca pen, or white Uniball Signo pen to do this.
Another drawing tip (especially if you are using paints) is to erase your pencil sketch before adding color, so you can only see a light outline and you know where to add the paints. This way the pencil lines will NOT show through your finished drawing.
