What You’ll Need

  • Paper or a sketchbook
  • A pencil and an eraser for the guide lines
  • A black pen for the final outline
  • Colored pencils or markers in pink, green and cream
  • Or simply Procreate on your iPad, if you prefer to draw digitally

How to Draw Kawaii Watermelon: Step-by-Step

Follow the 4 steps in the tutorial image above. The new lines in each step are drawn in red.

  1. Draw the guide triangle. Sketch a tall triangle with a flat base, then draw a vertical center line through the middle. Keep these lines light, because you’ll erase them later.
  2. Round off the bottom. Draw a gentle curve under the base of the triangle, from one corner to the other. This curve becomes the bottom edge of the slice.
  3. Add the rind and the seeds. Draw two curved lines just above the bottom edge, following the same curve, for the rind. Then add three small ovals near the top left for the seeds.
  4. Outline and add the face. Ink the final lines and erase the guides. Draw a happy face low on the slice, just above the rind: two curved closed eyes, a small smile and round cheeks.

Tips for a Cute Kawaii Watermelon

  • Soften the corners. Round off the tip and the two bottom corners a little so the slice looks soft and squishy instead of sharp.
  • Keep the face low and wide. Place the eyes far apart and close to the rind, with a small smile in between.
  • Keep the seeds simple. A small cluster of three seeds looks neater than lots of scattered ones and leaves room for the face.
  • Use a small color palette. Coral pink, cream and two greens, with a dark brown outline and pink cheeks, keep it fresh and cute.
  • Make a summer pattern. Draw several slices at different angles on one page and fill the gaps with little seeds and dots.

Use a coral pink for the flesh, a soft cream for the band and green for the rind, with darker green stripes. Dark brown works beautifully for the seeds and outline, and light pink for the cheeks.
